A Customized Journey: Iceland Through Commissioned Postcards

In the summer of 2014, I went on a 24-day trip to Iceland. I asked 24 of my friends to sponsor me and place an order for the photograph they would like to receive after choosing a number between 1 and 24 corresponding to one of my days on the trip. None of the participants had ever been to Iceland or knew much about the country.

Each of them had to choose a piece of paper that was unusual, unexpected, and readily available to them on the day I asked them to participate in this project. They then had to write the selected number and their mailing address on the front, and the details of the desired image on the back.

I didn’t impose any restrictions on the requested photograph—whether regarding location, time, or the type of image. I simply specified that it had to be feasible. Everyone was free to make their own request and to write whatever they wanted on the back of the chosen piece of paper.

Each piece of paper was folded so that only the selected number was visible: I had no knowledge of the requests before I left, and all were opened on the day chosen in advance by my sponsors. My goal was then to photograph the requested postcard, ideally on the same day.
